Is anyone else digging into house projects during this time of stay at home togetherness? From decluttering and working on small fix it up projects, there seems to be an overwhelm of people taking on those honey-do lists. For me, it is a great escape from the craziness of the uncertainty that is part of the social distancing and Covid-19. But I have to admit at first it felt a bit hardened to work on house projects when there are people who are doing and risking so much in the health care community right now. But once I realized I could work on this from home, without interacting in the community or going into stores it seemed like the perfect fit for this time at home. It is giving me some sense of normalcy and comfort, which is something we could probably all use more of at a time like this.
Aside from the cleaning and organizing projects I am tackling designing our master bedroom & home office, which happens to be all in one room right now. (Anyone else trying to find space for a home office right now?) I moved the office into our bedroom last year when I gave up the space to become a bedroom. It’s not ideal, but it is working out okay. Earlier I talked about the need for storage for my home office over on Instagram, and how I decided to go with inexpensive and short term storage. But the rest of the room? I’m ready for that big girl, grown-up and put together space. I’ll share more about the wall that is serving as my home office later this week. But for the time being let’s take a peek at my plans for the bedroom.
I’ve decided to start embracing more color in my home design plans. While white is big in the design world, and I love it for an overall look in big open spaces, I’ve decided to start pulling in more color into my design plans. Keeping big items like lighting, the bed, and window treatments neutral means that they will work for a long time. But the rug and some accessories are a great way to pull in color. And I’m tossing around the idea of going bolder with the wall color, like the deeper green color below that works well with a green-gray.
Side note: Green-gray happens to be the undertones in the walls and cabinetry in our laundry room, which we updated last year. We designed that room to be our forever/long-term laundry room and so I know that this undertone is something that I will continue to repeat throughout our home. That means it was important for the colors for the bedroom to work well with green-grays.
You can take a peek at the mood board below. It gives you a chance to see the color palette as well as the look and feel for the bedroom.
While we very much live in a farmhouse, and I love bringing in traditional farmhouse style elements into our home, I also love the mid-century modern look. So I did my best to represent both of those looks with the design plan. A few things I think about when pulling together the overall look of a room: the undertones, the styles, and some must-haves.
undertones
The bed is something we already own, and the one thing that is staying in the room. The picture doesn’t show it well, but the upholstery on the bed falls in the green-gray category. The curtains are flax that have specks of green-gray. So the undertones work together. For the walls, I am considering using the same light green-grey that we have in our laundry room, or this bold green color above.
styles
The mid-century style is well represented in the dresser (I picked up a vintage one a couple of months ago off of Marketplace), the bedframe, and the bedside lighting. A more traditional and farmhouse style comes from the beaded flush mount light, floor mirror, and rug.
design must-haves
I also have a few must-haves for the rooms that I style, and you can see them all in the plan above:
- greenery
- something black
- something wicker/rattan
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this overall plan! What do you think about the colors? Would you go for light walls or color? I’m going to have to share the paint samples with you on Instagram later this week, so make sure you are following me over there.
