One of the best parts about moving to a small town is the newspaper. We are fortunate to live in an area that can put out a weekly newspaper. But this paper is nothing like what I was used to reading growing up. When we first got married I really didn’t see the point of the newspaper, and didn’t subscribe. But now I’m thankful for the press, and my weekly edition that comes to our door. And also, my children think being in the paper is something that everyone gets to do regularly. What a difference my local paper as a kid!
A few things you will not see in a country newspaper:
World news.
Or state news for that matter.
Stock market reports.
Weather reports. (They print two days before it is released. Probably wouldn’t be the most reliable source of weather forecasts.)
College or professional sports.
Comics or Political Comics
A few things you will see in a country newspaper:
Letters to the press.
Salaries for all public school employees (Including my yearly salary for those two days I subbed. Yes folks, I made $175 last year!)
Church services.
Remembering the past.
Pictures of school activities.
Social news.
And everyones favorite, all of the speeding tickets, and other traffic violations, with names and dollar amounts.
So while it may be a little embarrassing when you are the one with the speeding ticket, the newspaper is a little breath of fresh air. It makes you think, even if just for a moment, that the dispute about the new road is the biggest issue anyone needs to worry about. City girl remember, you may have to go somewhere else for your world news when you move to the country. But you also will want to make sure you obey traffic laws.
