This small wall space is in our laundry room, which also holds our pantry for the kitchen and the coat closet. So I guess you could call it a laundry/pantry/coat room. Anyone else with spaces that have to serve multiple purposes? I’m sure you can relate, we all have rooms that do double or triple duty. But hey, it makes sense for us to make good use of our space. The problem is these work horse spaces often get neglected in terms of design because we need them to function and feel that they can’t do much more than hold our stuff. I totally get that mindset. Those spaces are functional and so “pretty” ends up on the back burner. Up until a week ago the wall space in this multi-functional room looked like this.
This little ladder bookshelf came from Wayfair, and I love that it has both function and form, but I never intended for it to stay in this spot. We put it together in our garage, carried it inside the door, set it here, and here it stayed. For a long time. (Like I’m embarrassed to say how long.) So I recently moved it back to the garage for a coat of paint and this time when it comes into the house it’s going to its intended destination.
With the wall space empty again I forced myself to pause and think about what I need this space to do for us. Because the space is right by the door to our garage it mostly serves as a landing spot for small items going in and out the door. So I got to work with making it both functional and beautiful.
The small red table came from a local store in Elkader and is about 2 inches wider than I wanted, but it was too cute to pass up. Look at those legs! The table top serves as a space for resting bags, water bottles, or anything else that I may need to set out for a quick trip. It also gave me a space to put our chalk markers for our chalkboard. Now they are closer to the pantry board, and where our kids can easily reach them. (Hence the artistic chalkboard.)
The wall space above the table was the perfect spot for a skinny mirror. This one came from Hobby Lobby during one of their 50% sales. If you are looking for a mirror check their online ads and watch for a sale, or you can grab their 40% off coupon online that they offer every week. Makes purchasing a mirror much more affordable!
The basket below the table is a great hiding spot for flip-flops, folders, and anything else that needs to be stored by the door to the garage.
This space is already serving us well, helping us stay organized and giving us a warm welcome into our home. Another small space that can be changed to be both appealing to the eye and functional. Check the box for another win-win!
