One plus of creating content for The Logbook is that my friends and family understand just how much I love vintage “junk”. If there’s good wood left, like this hutch, I’ll probably want it. Bonus points for any rust or patina, like this huge rusty cabinet. So when my mother-in-law gave me this flour cabinet from an old kitchen I knew I would eventually find the perfect place for it in our home.
Recently I was picking up the living room for the fifth time that day and I realized I needed more storage space for our blankets. I love a warm and cozy blanket in the evening, especially in the colder months, but I also want a place to put them during the day. Then it hit me, I have the perfect place to store my blankets! The old flour cabinet. To prepare the flour cabinet for our home I made a couple small changes, and it was ready to hold all my warm blankets.
First I touched up the cabinet. This required sanding down rough corners, and putting some wood glue down in areas where larger chunks seemed to be coming loose. {I used this glue.}
Next I vacuumed out the cabinet, and then wiped the whole thing down with our Thieves cleaner.
After that I painted the cabinet with a beautiful green milk paint and let it dry completely. I rubbed a white furniture wax on top of the paint to lighten the final look.
The final step was adding casters because, well, do I actually need a reason for adding casters? They are beautiful. In fact I am often tempted to buy things simply because they come with casters. No judging, we all have our weakness.
I went with these casters, however I see they are now out of stock! I used these casters on the hutch project and loved the look and quality!
Now the repurposed vintage cabinet sits in my living room, holding blankets that just beckon cool autumn nights. If you need me I’ll be right here, curled up with my blanket, sipping something pumpkin flavored.
What would you store in this extra large cabinet? I’m pretty sure that with time it will be over run with toys!
